FLORENCE – Phylis Jean Eckard Burgh, 90, widow of William “Billy” F. Burgh, Jr., died on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, after a brief illness. She was born in Syracuse, NY, on April 9, 1933, a daughter of the late Fowler L. and Mary Fowler Eckard.
She graduated from Pulaski High School in 1952, married and raised her family, and returned to college and graduated in 1976.
Phylis was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and served stateside during the Korean Conflict. She was very active in American Legion Post 1, where she was a lifetime member. She was a founder of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary in Florence. She was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans, where she served as Senior Vice-Commander and Membership Chairperson. She also served as Vice-President of Widows and Widowers of Deceased Veterans.
She retired from Pee Dee Pathology following 28 years of employment. She enjoyed bowling and made many friends over the years. She bowled at Lee All-Stars and Southgate since 1994. She earned two Pro-Am titles and many medals in the Pee Dee Senior Sports Classic.
Phylis loved helping people and worked with many charities.
Survivors are her son, Fred W. Burgh, and her daughter, Jane B. Saverance, both of Florence; two grandchildren, Mandy S. Miller (Chris) of Darlington, SC, and David L. Saverance (Angel) of Florida; three great-granddaughters, Mackenzie S. Graham (Justin Cooper) of Moncks Corner, SC, Gracyn R. Smith (Rob Alsobrook) of Florence, and Leranda Saverance of Florida; and a great-great-granddaughter, Avery Jane Alsobrook.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Monday, March 4, 2024, in Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Florence National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home.
