FLORENCE Agnes Hamer Hoffmeyer Rhodes Chapman, 93, of Florence, passed away February 19, 2014, at home following an illness. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late George Henry Theodore Hoffmeyer and Ethel Revell Hoffmeyer. She was the youngest of ten children, six brothers: Gus, Marion, Weldon, Adolph, Massebeau, and Benjamin Hoffmeyer, and three sisters: Nanny Sue Hoffmeyer, Bernice Summers, and Ethel Bunch Humphries, all predeceased her.
She graduated from McClenaghan High School in Florence in 1938, and later went to cosmetology school in Charleston. She worked hard all of her life at many different jobs, Belk, Sears, and Olan Mills, but her passion was the Farmers Market. She enjoyed selling flowers and vegetables she grew herself, and cakes and chicken salad she made herself. She loved to cook for family and friends, plant flowers, and work in her yard.
She was predeceased by her first husband, William Morris Rhodes, Sr., in 1965, and Jay F. Chapman in 2012. She was also predeceased by her first grandchild, Jason Hoffmeyer Rhodes in 1999.
Surviving are her daughter, Rachel (Rusty) Greer, and son, Morris (Renee) Rhodes, both of Florence; two grandchildren, Scarlett and Marshall Rhodes; step-daughters, Carol Smith and Susie Craven; one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Chapman was a life-long member of Pisgah United Methodist Church. She loved her church and many church friends, and any memorials may be made to Pisgah Church.
Her family expresses special thanks to McLeod Hospice, and her devoted friends, Dot Bateman, Margaret Hoffmeyer, Nancy Jeffords, Anne Harris, and the late Foye Matthews. Your visits made her very happy.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 22, 2014, at Pisgah United Methodist Church with burial following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, at Waters-Powell Funeral Home.
