Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 20, 2024, in Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel with visitation one hour prior to the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery.
She was born in Florence on Nov. 27, 1933, to the late Julius Benson Watts and Gertrude Watts Howard. She graduated from McClenaghan High School and worked at McLeod Infirmary and Medical Center for 34 years.
In 1952, she married her high school sweetheart Taso J. Stoupenos. They were married for 60 years before his death.
She was a lifelong member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where she was part of Hazel Hatchell’s Sunday School class, WMU and Effie Flowers Circle.
Betty made us better people with her compassionate, unconditional love. She fed us copious amounts of wonderful Southern food and always had room for one more at the table.
She was at her best when she was taking care of someone — from her family to babies in the church nursery. Betty loved visiting with family and friends and cherished her steaming-hot cup of morning coffee.
We will miss her laughter and her encyclopedic memory of people and places past. But we will carry her in our hearts as we go about the business of taking care of each other.
Survivors include her son Johnny (Robin) Stoupenos; grandchildren Leigh (Jason) Bazen and Matt (Jenna) Stoupenos; step-great-grandchildren Clay and Austyn Bazen, brothers J.B. (Gay) Watts and David L. Watts.
She is also survived by special nieces and nephews and a special family: the Sims.
Betty was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and a son Andrew “Andy” Stoupenos; her stepfather Rushton Howard; sisters Dorothy Watts Hilton, Sara Linna Watts and Delores Watts Ivey; brothers Tom, Wallace, Warren and Robert Watts.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Immanuel Baptist Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
