Betty Jones Wilkinson

FLORENCE Betty Jones Wilkinson, 90, died Monday, May 11, 2015, after an illness.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 14, 2015, at St. Johns Church with burial following in Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Thursday, in the church Parish Hall.

Mrs. Wilkinson was born in Charleston, South Carolina, a daughter of the late Henry Esby and Majie Elizabeth McDougall Jones. She graduated from Florence High School and attended Flora McDonald College. She married the late John Walter Wilkinson, Jr., of Florence, at Fort Ord, California, in 1951.

Mrs. Wilkinson worked with the Department of Social Services and retired from Florence County. She was an active member of St. Johns Church in Florence. She was also active in the Florence community, where she was a member of the Athorian Club, Florence Junior League, and the Pine Haven Garden Club. She also served as secretary of the Florence Council of Garden Clubs. She enjoyed volunteering at the Manna House for over 25 years.

She is survived by her son, J. Walter (Sarah) Wilkinson, III, of Pawleys Island, SC; a sister, Ann Vandiver, of Anderson, SC; a granddaughter, Bogan (Will) Temple, and great-grandson, Harry Temple, all of Augusta, Ga; two nieces, Lide Vandiver of Dallas, TX, and Elizabeth Vandiver (Rick) Harris of Greenville, SC; and a nephew, David Vandiver, of Atlanta, GA.
