Carolyn Matthews Obituary

FLORENCE Carolyn Thomson McCutchen Matthews died peacefully in the early morning hours of April 30, 2016 with her friends at the Presbyterian Community Home in Florence, SC. Born May 2, 1923, in Bishopville, SC, she was the youngest daughter of Janie Dudley Hollingsworth and Manton Bagley McCutchen.

A graveside service will be held at Mount Olivet Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Fairfield County at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 6, 2016,with her first great-nephew, The Very Reverend Ken Weldon, officiating. Waters-Powell Funeral Home of Florence is assisting the family.

Cally graduated from Bishopville High School and Winthrop College, where she majored in Home Economics. After graduation she worked in Sumter, SC, as a home demonstration agent for the county. In 1946, she married Lt. Robert Elliott Matthews and lived in Charleston. After WWII and the Navy, they made their home in Great Falls, SC, where they owned Matthews Drug Co. Cally and Rob rarely missed a USC game and tailgating with family.

Cally was a member of the Great Falls Presbyterian Church. She served as Moderator of the Presbyterian Women for the South Atlantic Synod. She was also a member of the Thursday Afternoon Bridge Club, the DAR and the Great Falls Garden Club.

Surviving are four children, Robert Elliott Matthews, Jr., Manton McCutchen Matthews and wife Catherine, Marcus Boulware Matthews, and Mary Matthews Tallevast; five grandsons, William DeKalb Tallevast, V and Stephanie, Robert Elliott Tallevast, Manton McCuthen Matthews, Jr. and Rhea, John Taylor Matthews and Jennifer, and Marcus Boulware Matthews, Jr. and Angela. She had four great-grandsons, Robert Elliott Tallevast, Jr., John Taylor Matthews, Jr., Adam Manton Matthews and William DeKalb Tallevast, VI. Her four great-granddaughters include Mary Brit Tallevast, Anna Wallace Matthews, Mary McCutchen Matthews, and Miley Cooper Matthews. She is also survived by step-granddaughter Deanna Crawford and Mike and their children Dylan and Brook. She has many nieces, nephews, cousins and her namesake Carolyn McCutchen Plowden Turner, whom she loved very much.
