EFFINGHAM Flora Cynthia Turner Matthews, 88, died Sunday, February 23, 2014, at her residence after an illness.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 26, 2014, in Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Matthews was born in Effingham, a daughter of the late Jerome Ralph and Louisa Selena McLaughlin Turner. She graduated from Tans Bay High School and the Florence Business College. She was retired from South Carolina School Food Service and Florence School District 1.
Mrs. Matthews was a member of Bethsaida United Methodist Church. She loved planting, growing, and sharing her flowers. She also loved her dog, Blackie, and her cats, Baby and Bugger.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband of 48 years, Henry Matthews; her brothers, James E. Turner, Benjamin M. Turner, and H. Gordon Turner; her sisters, Alma L. Turner, Edna Turner, and Della T. Caufield; and a nephew, David Turner.
Survivors include her daughter, Sharon M. (Jerry D., Sr.) Taylor of Effingham; two grandchildren, Jerry David Taylor, Jr., and James Benjamin Taylor, I, both of Effingham; her great-grandchildren, who affectionately called her Little Great-Grandma, Jami Madison Taylor and James Benjamin Taylor, II; a sister-in-law, Sybil B. Matthews of Coward; 13 nieces and 12 nephews.
The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Gilliam Skinner, Dr. John Gause, McLeod Home Health, and McLeod Hospice, and their staffs, for their wonderful care of Mrs. Matthews.
