Dr. Cecil Edward Floyd

         Dr. Cecil Edward “Eddie” Floyd was born in Florence, SC to Cecil and Margaret Floyd and grew up in Lake City, SC.  Dr. Floyd passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 15, 2026, surrounded by his family.
         He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 66 years, Kay Baker Floyd, and grandsons Cecil Edward “Trey” Floyd III and Keith William “Billy” Buckhouse Jr.
He is survived by his children, Dr. Coleman Floyd Buckhouse (Keith), Cecil Edward “Bubby” Floyd, Jr., and Emory Kay “Sissy” Floyd; eight grandchildren, Mac Getz (Melissa), Baker Getz (Brenna), Katherine Kay Getz, Martha Floyd Thompson (Hunter), George Floyd, Daisy Buckhouse, Emery Buckhouse, and Eddie Buckhouse; and four great-grandchildren.
         Dr. Floyd graduated from Lake City High School where he played football.  Having grown up across the street from the only community swimming pool in the area, he became an avid swimmer and later became manager of the pool.  Managing the pool and selling boiled peanuts instilled a business forward mindset that continued throughout his life.
He went on to attend and graduate from the University of South Carolina, where he was a letterman in swimming and a member of Kappa Alpha Order.  This is also where he met his wife, Kay Baker Floyd, and many lifelong friends.  He was also a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina and completed his surgical residency at Louisiana State University and Charity Hospital.  He studied under his mentor, Dr. Isadora Cohn.
         After residency, he returned to Florence with his family to practice with his uncles, Dr. Lamar Lee and Dr. Frank Lee.  Dr. Floyd later established Floyd Medical Group where he practiced general and vascular surgery at all three local hospitals (Saunders Memorial, Bruce, and McLeod).  He continued to practice in Florence for over 50 years, and retired from MUSC Florence (formerly Florence General Hospital and Carolinas Hospital).
        On top of working in the medical field, he was also passionate about agriculture and land.  He and his wife built Floyd Farms as a business together as a result of his passion.  They worked together to build a portfolio of land and farms around the Pee Dee and surrounding areas.
        He was a founding member of the Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation serving as Vice-Chairman and later as Chairman.  His love for tennis led him, along with the help of the foundation, to fund and build the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center.  He also served on the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees for 42 years and served as chairman for 4 of those years.  He was the longest serving member of the Board of Trustees at the University of South Carolina.
        He was appointed by President George W. Bush, and served as the Civilian Ambassador to the United Nations in New York City.
        He enjoyed traveling the world with his wife, where they would collect art pieces to remind them of their extensive travels.  He also enjoyed spending time at Pawleys Island, SC, New York City, and Pamplico, SC.  He loved anything that involved his beloved Gamecocks, his family, and the community in which he grew up.
        The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at the Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center, 201 South Dargan Street. The family will greet friends immediately following the service. A private burial will follow the service.  Services are directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.
