FLORENCE Edward Kenneth Ken Jewell died Friday, January 3, 2014. He was 72 years old and had been in declining health.
Mr. Jewell was born in Florence on December 3, 1941, the second child of Edward Earl Jewell and Frances Clements Jewell. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and joined the SC Air National Guard and earned the rank of Captain as a fighter pilot. As a member of the 157th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron based at McEntire Joint National Guard Base, he piloted the F-102A Delta Dagger.
After completing his military service, he became an operational manager for McDonalds for several years. Having a love for hunting and fishing, he eventually opened his own sporting goods store, South Carolina Outdoors. He later became a licensed realtor and worked with Burt Jordan Realtors until his health began to fail in 2010.
Mr. Jewell, being a wildlife supporter, was an avid member and sponsor for Ducks Unlimited. He was also a member of the Pee Dee Shrine Club and Trinity United Methodist Church in Darlington.
He is survived by his brother, Larry E. Jewell of Lexington, and his wife Judi; two sons: Robert K. Jewell of Mount Pleasant, and his wife Kimberly, and John Edward Jewell of Chattanooga, TN; and Mr. Jewells beautiful grandchild, Caroline Phillips Jewell.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 7, 2014, in the chapel of Waters-Powell Funeral Home in Florence. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
