FLORENCE - Elliot Rivers Maxwell died Monday, March 10, 2014, in Carolina Pines Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Florence, South Carolina, on September 7, 1924, a son of the late Pinckney Johnstone and Jessie Nettles Maxwell. He graduated from Florence High School and attended the University of South Carolina. He was the owner of Maxwell Insurance Agency for many years.
He was a World War II veteran having served in the Army Air Corps as a bomber gunner with the 73rd Bomb Wing and retired as a Major from the South Carolina National Guard. He also served many years with the 51st Military Police Battalion stationed in Florence, South Carolina.
He was a life-long member of St. John's Episcopal Church, the Terpsichoran Dance Club and past treasurer and lifetime member of the Classic MOPARS of the Pee Dee.
Mr. Maxwell was preceded in death by four sisters, Elizabeth M. Johnston, Jessie M. Anderson, Ainslie M. Taylor and Margaret Maxwell Mueller; and three brothers, P.J. Maxwell, Jr., Earle Wilson Maxwell and William James Maxwell.
Survivors include his children: Sarah Jane Maxwell of the home, Louise Marvin Maxwell of Murrells Inlet, SC and Frederick Rivers Maxwell (Diane) of La Porte City, Iowa; four grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a number of beloved nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 14, 2014, in St. John's Church, with full military honors, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.
