Frances Smith Obituary

FLORENCE Rebecca Smith passed away October 22, 2014, at Carolinas Hospital System. Ms. Smith was born January 15, 1937, in Charleston, SC, and was raised in Latta, SC. She was the daughter of Frank and Louise Ellen Smith.

She graduated from Winthrop College and earned her Masters degree from the University of South Carolina. A former teacher and guidance counselor, she served as Principal of McLaurin Elementary School in Florence until her retirement.

True to her God and the Methodist faith, she was an active member of Central United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School, played in the Handbell Choir, and was a long-standing member of the Sara Blanton Circle. She was director of the Shepherds Center of the Pee Dee, Charter and Board member of the Pee Dee Federal Credit Union, member of Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Society, charter member of Beta Gamma Chapter of Kappa Kappa Iota. She was a volunteer and leader of Make-A-Wish Foundation in the Pee Dee, which was near and dear to her heart as she was an advocate for all children. She was an active member of the League of Women Voters and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Survivors include cousin, Margaret Ellen Pope of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, and her children Ivy Pope of Dillon, SC, and Jamie Pope of Atlanta, GA; aunt, Mrs. W. A. (Boody) Smith of Timmonsville, SC, and her children, Donald Phillips of Newnan, GA, Cynthia Bridges of Spartanburg, SC, Jeffrey Phillips and Betsy Langston, both of Timmonsville; and other cousins, Susanne Jordan of Greenville, Judy Hennesey of Myrtle Beach, and Frank (Anne) McGirt of Albuquerque, NM.

The memorial service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 25, 2014, at Central United Methodist Church with visitation one hour prior to the service in the church Commons Area. Entombment will follow in the church columbarium, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.
