Gary Allen Swindler, of Florence, South Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2025 in the McLeod Hospice House. Born on August 23, 1955 in Mare Island, California, Gary spent most of his life in Charleston and Florence, where he built a legacy of hard work and kindness to others.
Gary was employed in the construction industry for many years before establishing his own lawn service business and later retiring from the City of North Charleston Parks and Recreation Department. He was admired for his strong work ethic, landscaping, and love of ballfields.
Beyond his professional life, Gary loved the outdoors and found joy in sports, especially golf. He was an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs and rarely missed a chance to cheer them on. His love of music was evident in his deep passion for classic rock, especially Jimmy Buffett, whose songs were the soundtrack to many of his happiest moments shared with his son Adam.
Gary attended the public schools of North Charleston and was a proud graduate of Garrett High School, where he played football and tennis.
He is predeceased by his mother, Lois Swindler, his father, Thomas Washington Swindler, and his brother, Thomas “Tommy” Swindler of Charleston, SC. Gary’s memory will live in the hearts of his surviving family members, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. He is survived by his son, Adam (Jenna) Swindler; his two granddaughters, Anna Reese and Mayson Kate Swindler; two brothers, David (Belinda) Swindler of North Charleston, SC and Ricky Swindler of Lexington SC; a host of nieces and nephews and many friends he called family in Florence including the Millers, Shaffers, Smiths, Ateyehs, Jumana Swindler, and especially Sylvia "Gaga" Miller.
Gary will be remembered as a friend whose laughter, love of life, and passion for music and sports will remain in the hearts of all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations and memorials may be made to McLeod Hospice, through the McLeod Health Foundation, P.O. Box 100551 Florence SC 29502.
A celebration of life will be held privately at a later date.
