George Slice Jr. Obituary

George “G.B.” Bailey Slice, Jr. passed away on April 5, 2026 at his home in Florence, South Carolina after a brief illness. A devoted Christian, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, George was loved by all who knew him.

George was born on August 29, 1938 in Chapin, South Carolina to George Bailey Slice, Sr. and Emma Louise Summer Slice. He was the 4th of 7 children in a tight-knit family. He graduated Chapin High School and then went on to earn a bachelors degree from Newberry College and masters degree from Western Carolina University. In 1961, he began his career teaching history and science at Southside High School, alongside his life-long friends, Gerald Holley and Clyde Wrenn. After a promotion to assistant principal, his teaching position was filled by a woman who would become the love of his life, Patricia Anne Patrick. He later became principal of Southside Junior High School. He ended his career in district administration for Florence School District One and retired after 31 years of service, leaving a lasting impression on the generations of students and the school community that he touched through his dedication, leadership, and genuine care.

Patricia and George married on November 22, 1969 and had two children, Alison Gray Slice Salley (Fred) and Wylie Summer Slice (Kelly). George was known for his deep spiritual connection with the Lord and loved singing hymns, often serenading his family any chance he had. He was a member of St. Paul Church of Florence where he was an active participant and teacher of his Sunday School class until he no longer was able due to declining health. He cherished all friendships he made throughout his life and always held those close to him dear. George loved all things Carolina Gamecocks. A member of the Gamecock Club for 44 consecutive years, he frequented all varieties of Gamecock sporting events with his brothers and sister, wife, children, and grandchildren. He was a life-long lover of dogs, especially his Irish Setters and Dachshunds, and more recently grew to love his several cats. He had a passion for farming, growing his own fruits and vegetables, which he loved sharing with his family and friends to enjoy. Though a reluctant world traveler, he explored places such as Ireland, Mexico, Alaska, and Hawaii with his family, but treasured beach vacations most - especially the many summers spent in Garden City, South Carolina.

George is survived by: his wife of 56 years, Patricia Anne Patrick Slice; daughter, Alison Gray Slice Salley (Fred) of Florence, SC and son, Wylie Summer Slice (Kelly) of Chapin, SC; grandchildren, Presley Ann Gilder Harr (Stuart) of Simpsonville, SC, Benjamin “Kent” Gilder of Winston Salem, NC, Layne Reece Salley of Florence, SC,  and Jackson Bopp Salley of Florence, SC; great-grandchildren, Finnick Harrison Harr and Summer Ann Harr of Simpsonville, SC; sister, Margaret Slice Epting (Joe) of Chapin, SC; brother-in-law William “Billy” David Patrick (Cathy) of Florence, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents George Bailey Slice, Sr. and Emma Louise Summer Slice; brothers James Carole “Jimmy” Slice (Mary Jo), Rev. Paul Owen Slice (Karilyn), Heyward Fulmore Slice (Louetta), and Charles “Stanley” Slice (Lucy); sister Mary Ruth Haile (Bobby); and nephew Ronald “Ronnie” Epting.
