Grover Williams Obituary

FLORENCE Grover DeVere Williams, 95, died Friday, April 3, 2015, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence after an illness.

Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 6, 2015, at Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. Rev. Randy Oswalt will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home.

Mr. Williams was born on September 22, 1919, in Asheboro, NC, a son of the late Gurney L. and Iland Burns Williams. He retired as branch manager of Pilot Life Insurance Co., in Florence, and had been a resident of Florence for 53 years. He was a member of College Park Baptist Church, and had been a faithful church member all of his life. Mr. Williams was an ordained deacon and served the church in a number of capacities over the years. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was honorably discharged as a sergeant.

Mr. Williams was predeceased by his wife of forty-seven years, Mrs. Virginia Hinshaw Williams; his wife of nineteen years, Mrs. Josephine Shelley Williams; a daughter-in-law, Faye Sports Williams; two grandchildren, Ronnie Williams, Jr., and Amber Williams; and two sisters.

Survivors include three sons, Rev. DeVere Williams (Cynthia) of Maggie Valley, NC, Ronnie Williams of Darlington, and Van Williams (Glenda) of Florence; five grandchildren, DeAnn Griffin (Robert) of Mauldin, Vicki Williams of Columbia, April Purvis (Matthew) of Greer, Dr. Kristen Williams of Charleston, and Dr. Virginia Webb (Justin) of Simpsonville; five great-grandchildren, Ashton and William Griffin, both of Mauldin, Matthew and Henry Purvis, both of Greer, and Parker Webb of Simpsonville; two step-sons, Jimmy Shelley (Deena) of Hartsville, and Edward Shelley (Betty Ann) of Wichita Falls, TX; and three step-daughters, Francis Ellis of Darlington, Patricia Greenan and Lynn Gardner, both of Florence.

Memorials may be made to College Park Baptist Church, 1501 Third Loop Rd., Florence, SC 29505.
