Harriet Virginia Cain was born June 17, 1923, in Pamplico, SC, fourth child of William Richardson and Bannie Irene Hyman Cain. The family moved to Florence when she was six, and her mother died shortly afterward. She graduated from Florence High School, first in her family to accomplish that milestone.
She married the love of her life, Bill Charles Presson, on March 2, 1941, and the U.S. Army soon sent him to Tooele, Utah. His bride, who had never traveled outside the Carolinas, boarded a train alone and crossed the country to join him. She returned to Florence when Bill shipped out to England.
After the war, they made their home in Florence and raised their two daughters. She lived her faith every day and was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church. She was also a member and past president of Wild Rose Garden Club. She moved to Wyndham Lakes in 2010 to be closer to her daughter, Brenda, who was her tender caregiver in the last days of her life. On June 17 of this year she celebrated her 90th birthday with family.
Her parents, her husband, and three siblings preceded her in death, Jack W. Cain, Wilburn A. Cain, and Mary C. Gallagher. One brother survives, Tommy H. Cain of Brandon, FL. Also surviving are her devoted daughters, Virginia (Ginny) P. Mobley and husband, Chuck, of Griffin, GA, and Brenda P. Wethington and husband, Tommy, of Orange Park, FL. Other survivors include her beloved grandchildren, Stacey Forsyth, Matt Delarber, and Megan Wethington; and great-grandchildren: Grace-Marie Knowlton, Dallas and Smith Forsyth, Logan and Matthew Delarber and Marc Leon. All these and her many friends in SC and FL will miss her quiet, caring ways and her wonderful southern cooking, especially her fried chicken and macaroni and cheese.
