FLORENCE - Mr. Jack Cherry, Jr. , 88, passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2014, after a short illness.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Central United Methodist Church (Florence, SC), directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, April 24, at Oakdale Cemetery in Washington, NC, directed by Paul Funeral Home.
“Papa Jack” as he was lovingly called by his family and friends was born in Washington, NC to the late Annabelle and Jack Cherry on February 21, 1926. Jack graduated from Washington High School where he excelled in basketball. He was a graduate of North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC) in Civil Engineering. He was an Army Air Corps veteran from World War II. He was employed by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (currently CSX) for 35 years and retired in 1985 as an executive in Tampa, FL.
He is survived by his wife, Maree P. Cherry; his sister, Grace Sprott; children, Jack (Pamela) Cherry III, Kathy Jamison and Edwin (Angela) Cherry; grandchildren, Stephanie (Tom) Chelednik, Jennifer (Bryan) Knauss, Jacquelyn (Mike) Atkinson , Robert Cherry, and Katelin Cherry. He has seven great- grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends, especially Jules Hesse.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Jessie W Cherry; and grandson, Matthew Cherry.
