James E Cook, 86, of Florence, SC, died January 1, 2026 at his home. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 21, 2026 at the First Presbyterian Church of Florence. James will be buried in Cannon Cemetery outside of Van Alstyne, TX.
James was born March 12, 1939 at Ariel Crossroad in Marion County, SC. He was the third of seven children born to Dessie Mae Richardson Cook and Mack Dale Cook. James retired from the cement, aggregate and concrete industry in 2007 and continued to consult for several years after retiring. He was a leading authority on concrete design and served as Vice President at Titan/Tarmac in Jacksonville, FL and Gifford Hill in Dallas, TX. He was an active member of the American Concrete Institute serving in many leadership roles and on various committees. James loved spending time with family, including his dog, Emmie, his boat and his boating friends, playing golf with his golf buddies and his antique car.
James is survived by his wife of 66 years, Cecelia Smith Cook of Florence; two children, P Mark Cook and wife Janell of Sumner, TX and Stephanie Spivey and husband David of Florence, SC; one grandson, Brad Cook and wife, Luz, of Allen, TX; one step-great-grandson, Samir, one brother, M. Dale Cook of Lexington, SC; one sister Betty J. Deshong and husband, Fred, of West Columbia, SC and numerous nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by a son; Noel Cook in 1981. He is also preceded in death by an infant sister; two brothers; Shephard E. Cook, Sr. and Bobby L. Cook and one sister; Judy C. Bowell.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in James’ memory to American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Florence Area Humane Society or charity of choice.
