FLORENCE - James Carlisle McLeod Jr., gracious gentleman and much loved husband and father, died May 18, 2014. He was 82 years old.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at Central United Methodist Church in Florence with interment to follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 20, 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at his home.

Mr. McLeod was born August 9, 1931, the eldest son of Floramay Holliday and James Carlisle McLeod, M.D., of Florence. He was predeceased by a sister, Flora McLeod Edwards of Sumter and brother, George Holliday McLeod, M.D., of Florence. He married Octavia Scales Phillips of Rockingham, NC, November 5, 1960.

He was a 1949 graduate of McClenaghan High School where he served as president of the student body. During that time he also was elected Governor of South Carolina Boys State. Mr. McLeod matriculated at the University of North Carolina where he was elected president of the freshman class, was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order, served as vice president of the student body and received the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Order of the Holy Grail. He graduated with an AB in Chemistry in 1953.

His subsequent graduation with a law degree from the University of South Carolina in 1959 and the achievement of his Juris Doctorate in 1971 led to a practice of the law as a partner in the firm of Willcox, Buyck and Williams until his retirement in 1998.

Mr. McLeod devoted his life to the service of his family, McLeod Hospital, and his beloved hometown of Florence. He served as a trustee for McLeod Health for more than 50 years. He was chairman of the Salvation Army Board, and president of the Florence Kiwanis Club. He also served on the boards of the Mental Health Association, the United Fund, the McLeod Hospice Board, the NBSC Community Board, the Hollins Cancer Center Community Board and the Francis Marion Foundation Board.

Mr. McLeod was a member of the 5th Judicial Conference and was appointed to the SC Ethics Committee by the Governor of South Carolina. He received the first Ralph King Anderson Service Award by the Florence County Bar Association of which he was a member.

Mr. McLeod is survived by his wife, Octavia; a son and daughter: George Holliday McLeod, II, of Florence, and Octavia McLeod Barrett of Charleston; a daughter-in-law, Alice Ammons McLeod and son-in-law, Henry Russell Barrett of Charleston; and a grandson, Henry Russell Barrett, Jr., also of Charleston. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Florence McLeod Ervin of Florence, and his dear brother-in-law, Philip Lafayette Edwards of Sumter.
