Jewell Annette Deaton Hutchinson

FLORENCE - Jewell Annette Deaton Hutchinson, beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and mentor died Thursday, June 5, 2014. Jewell Annette Deaton was born on October 19, 1931, in Mount Gilead, North Carolina, to Matty Harrison Story and Charles Lawrence Deaton. She married John Crawford Hutchinson of Evergreen, Florence County, on June 14, 1952. She graduated from Florence High, attended Winthrop College, and Florence Business School before embarking on a career as a legal secretary that spanned five decades with many lawyers, legal secretaries, and law enforcement professionals whom she considered good friends.

Miss Annette, as she was affectionately known, loved her faith, her family, and her friends. She remained an advocate for Immanuel Baptist Church, individual rights, education, and adult literacy. She was an extraordinary lover of people and shared many stories where no detail was forgotten or unappreciated.

Mrs. Hutchinson is preceded in death by her husband John (J. C.) Hutchinson, father Charles Deaton (Nellie Bridgers), mother Matty Hadly (Joe Hadly), and brother Charles Franklin Deaton.

She is survived by daughter Deborah Hutchinson Barringer (John) of Charlotte, NC, and son Thomas Eric Hutchinson of Florence, SC; grandchildren, John Laurence Barringer V of San Diego, CA, Anna Lawrence Robertson Barringer and Belva Garris Haynsworth Barringer of Charlotte, NC, Megan Amanda Hutchinson of Florence, SC. She is also survived by Mary Janice Deaton, Florence, SC; Norma Jamrogowicz, Mount Pleasant, SC; Marie Hyman, Mount Pleasant, SC; Bill Woodson (Minnie), Florence, SC; Powell Hutchinson (Carol), Quinby, SC; Loretta (Bobby) Harris, Florence, SC; Emma Laura Bruton, Mt. Gilead, NC; Frances (Tommy) Tharrington, Chapel Hill, NC; Corinne Graham, Cary, NC; Bill (Frances) Caudle, Hamlet, NC; Doug (Debbie) Deaton, Lexington, NC; Larry (Emily) Deaton, Denver, NC; Donna Deaton, Fayetteville, NC; Phillip (Beverly) Deaton, Beverly Hills, FL; Bill Slack, Burlington, NC; Evelyn (Glen) Poole, Mt. Gilead, NC; Harold (Carolyn) Story, Mt. Gilead, NC; special friends Bill and Will Bullock; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews of the Deaton, Story, Hutchinson, Benton family, and friends as close as family.

Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, June 8, 2014, at Immanuel Baptist Church in Florence, SC, with interment following in Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. The family will receive friends after the service in the Moody Fellowship Hall of Immanuel Baptist Church.
