FLORENCE Funeral services for Joan Flowers Stewart, age 81, of 1126 Courtland Ave., will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1629 W. Palmetto St., Florence, with entombment following in Florence Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, at Waters-Powell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Mrs. Stewart died Saturday, June 14, 2014, in a local hospital. Born in Lake City, SC, she was the daughter of the late Wofford B. and Christine Flowers. She graduated from Lake City High School and attended Columbia College, and was retired from the Florence District One School System. Prior to her illness, she was very active in her church and Circle, holding various positions in her circle.
She was predeceased by a son, Samuel Bernice Stewart of Columbia; a sister, Patsy Singletary (Donald) of Scranton; and a brother, Rudolph M. Flowers (Iris) of Southern Pines, NC.
Surviving are her husband of 62 years, James Marion Stewart, Jr., of the home; son, James Marion Stewart, III (Marta) of Charlotte, NC; a daughter-in-law, Karen M. Stewart of Columbia; an unofficially adopted daughter, Cindy Stroup (Jason); and two unofficially adopted grandchildren, Jessica and Jason Stroup of Florence.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 5446, Florence, SC 29502.
