FLORENCE – John Caston “J.C.” Blackwell, 81, died Saturday, November 2, 2024, after an illness.
He was born in Sumter, South Carolina, a son of the late Roland Oscar and Mary Cene Blackwell. Mr. Blackwell retired from the City of Florence where he was a police officer. Following his retirement, he worked in private security.
Mr. Blackwell was a veteran of the United States Navy, and also served in the Army National Guard. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 1.
He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Veronica Anne Dolan Blackwell; a sister, Laura Elizabeth Cates; and a brother, Robert Pickney Blackwell.
He is survived by three daughters, Karen M. Beckett of Orlando, FL, Judy B. Gootman (Stephen) of Florence, and Wanda G. Minick (Clyde) of Tallahassee, FL; four grandchildren, Kayla Danielle Blackwell of Florence, Jeffrey Curtis Beckett of Jacksonville, FL, Robert Payden Taylor of Augusta, GA, and Sara Nichole Beckett of Orlando, FL; two great-grandchildren, Hayden Brooks Lane and Ella Best Boswell, both of Florence; a nephew, Thomas A. Cates (Vickie) of Atlantic Beach, FL; and a niece, Patricia Lyndal Meshaw (Steve) of Burgaw, NC.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at Florence National Cemetery with military honors, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.
The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of Honorage Nursing Home and McLeod Hospice for their compassionate care of Mr. Blackwell.
