Johnnie Young, Jr. Obituary

Johnnie Hampton Young, Jr., 88, died March 3, 2026, after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be 12:00 noon, Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at Greenwood Baptist Church with visitation one hour prior to the service beginning at 11:00 a.m.  Burial will follow in Florence National Cemetery.

John was born in Florence County, SC, a son of the late Johnnie Hampton Young, Sr., and Sarah Margaret Broach Young.  He spent his childhood in Pamplico and moved with his family to Florence at the age of 13.  He graduated from McClenaghan High School. John served in the US Marine Corps and was stationed in many foreign locations, including Beirut, Lebanon.  He was honored to serve his country and enjoyed playing softball during his time of service.

Following his discharge, he returned to Florence and built a life with this late wife, Judith Yarborough Young, and their children.  He was a small business owner focusing on floor covering, while his wife was an interior decorator.

He was currently a member of Greenwood Baptist Church, where he and Judy were the first couple to be married there.  He was also a founding member of the former Unity Baptist Church.  John was passionate about his faith, and loved sharing silver crosses with everyone he met.

John was a lifelong outdoorsman, spending countless hours hunting and fishing.  He was happiest spending these hours with his children and grandchildren.  A devoted athlete, he coached youth baseball for over 30 years at Greenwood Baseball Park.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by two sons, Johnnie Kevin Young and Dr. Richard Hampton Young.

He is survived by his son, Micah Young (Christy) of Florence; two daughters-in-law, Melody Young of Manteo, NC, and Robin Young of Florence; three sisters, Jane Walters, Maude Moss, and Frances Sims, all of Florence; five grandchildren, Rachel Young Powell (Hunter) of Florence, McKenzie Young of Charlotte, NC, Taylor Jordan (Corey) of Scranton, Carla Landon (Vic) and Thomas Young, both of Florence; and five great-grandchildren, Jameson and Easton Powell, Caroline, Grayson and Hazel Landon; and many nieces and nephews.
