FLORENCE – Josephine Ausley Snipes, 96, wife of the late William Aubrey Snipes, passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at The Manor in Florence, SC.
Jo was the daughter of Avery and Gertrude Ray Ausley, and grew up in her home town of Mt. Gilead, NC. She attended Queens College in Charlotte majoring in business. She married Aubrey Snipes on June 28, 1947, in Mt. Gilead. She and Aubrey lived in Raleigh when they were first married, but were transferred to Florence in 1950, shortly after their son Greg was born.
She was a wonderful homemaker and excellent cook and seamstress, including needlepoint and quilting. Also, she enjoyed working for La-Z-Boy and Young Pecan. Along with her husband and son, she was an active member of St. Paul Methodist Church, and began the John Wesley Sunday School class for young married couples. She was a teacher and played the piano for the Johnny McNair class, as well as being active in the United Methodist Women. Over many years, she enjoyed visiting church members providing food and tapes of the Sunday sermons.
Jo is survived by her special children, Kathy and Mitch House, and her sister-in-law Gloria Goodson. She was predeceased by her husband Aubrey, and son Greg.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 13, 2024, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, preceded by visitation in the Family Life Center at St. Paul at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Florence, SC. Arrangements are being handled by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.
The family wishes to thank the staff at The Manor and Dr. Rick Howell for their excellent, loving care of Mrs. Snipes. Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1629 West Palmetto St., Florence, SC 29501.
