With his daughters at his side, Larry Earl “Scooter’” Jewell, 90, of Lexington, SC, passed peacefully into the eternal promise of his salvation Saturday morning, February 7, 2026 in Florence, SC after an extended illness.
He was born in Florence to the late Edward Earl Jewell and Frances Clements Jewell, and was predeceased by his younger brother, Edward Kenneth Jewell of Florence and nephew Robert Jewell. He was also predeceased by his first wife, mother of his children, the former Patricia Zeigler of Florence and later, Lexington.
Larry, or “Scooter” as nicknamed, was best known for his talents on the baseball field. He began with American Legion Junior Baseball. He was a 1953 graduate of McClenaghan High School where he played varsity for three years and was elected Team Captain as a senior. He played impressively also, in the fast semi-pro Palmetto league, with the Florence Gales for the summer of ‘55.
Unbeknownst to many, in his younger days Larry was also an excellent ping pong player, representing the City of Florence in the state tournament for five years.
As a freshman at the University of South Carolina he was a walk-on member of the Gamecock baseball team, successfully securing a scholarship for the remainder of his Gamecock career and a starting position at second base. He lettered three years, was known for his outstanding defense with a fielding average of .972 (8 errors in 279 chances) and a career batting average of .301. Acclaimed highly as a competitor and leader, yet always notably modest, he was elected Team Captain and Most Valuable Player as a Senior. He took great pride in the honor of being named All ACC his Junior and Senior years. Larry was sent to the Florida-Alabama minor league by MLB but the potential of his baseball career was ended when he was drafted into the US Army.
However, his commitment to Gamecock Baseball and Carolina Athletics did not stop there. He was a long-time member of the Lexington County Gamecock Club and served on its Board of Directors. He was a member of the USC Association of Lettermen, for which he served as President in 2005, and a member of the USC Hall of Fame Selection Committee. He also proudly served several years as a USC Athletic Department Ambassador at many Gamecock sporting events and functions. He was present in Omaha for Gamecock Baseball back-to-back National Championships in 2010 and 2011, and counted those high on the list of his greatest experiences.
Larry was a 1957 graduate of the University of South Carolina with a BA in English. Upon completion of his military service, he enjoyed a successful lifetime career with Champion International/Georgia-Pacific Corporations. After retirement he spent much of his time meticulously working in his beautifully manicured yard and also golfing, traveling, many breakfasts at Waffle House with “the guys” and lunches with his daughters.
In 2015 Larry was among the honored inductees into the Florence, SC Athletic Hall of Fame for his significant achievements in the sport of baseball.
He is survived by his daughters whom he adored, Donna Jewell Lifchez (Erik) and Gay Jewell Hudson (Darrell), grandchildren Jacob (Kara), Dylan, Tyler (Jen) Soles, Sydney (Ben) Murphy, Morgan (Mark) Parrish, Makenzie Hudson, Chase Hudson, Jeremy Hudson, Crystal Clark (Brent), and great-grandchildren Harper Soles, Aralynn Soles, Ransom and Leo Parrish, Caden and Mia Clark.
Larry is also survived by those who became family…devoted caregivers, worth their weight in gold, who grew to love him greatly, as he did them. Immeasurable gratitude is extended to Rosemary Watts, Dorothy Moore, and Dominique Livingston for unending dedication to Larry’s care and quality of life for the past three years.
Also invaluable were the VA Home Health Team that provided wonderful services and care as needed, and most recently the amazing staff members and caregivers at Veteran Village of Florence.
A memorial service will be held in Lexington, SC on Saturday, February 21st at Barr-Price Funeral Home, 609 Northwood Rd. Visitation with the family will begin at 2:00 p.m., followed by the service at 3:00 p.m. There will be a private interment at Mount Hope Cemetery in Florence.
