FLORENCE - M. Reese Campbell, 91, died Wednesday, April 23, 2014 in a local hospital.
Memorial services will be 3:00 PM Friday, April 25, 2014 at First Baptist Church directed by Waters-Powell. The family will receive friends immediately following the services at the church.
Mr. Campbell was born in Claussen, SC, a son of the late Bessie Garrison and Southern Mortimer Campbell. He served as a WWII Veteran in the Air Force from February 1943-1946 where he finished Radio and Gunnery School. He also finished B-29 training the day the atomic bomb was dropped on Japan. He made his last flight as a radio operator on the Enola Gay from Rosewall to Tinkerfield, Oklahoma after it returned from the Pacific.
Mr. Campbell worked on the railroad where he saw it change from Atlantic Coastline to CSX Transportation from 1941 through 1983. He retired as a freight agent in 1983.
He was a member of First Baptist Church for over 50 years where he served as a deacon. He was also a member of the Railroad Employees Retired Club, a Life Mason in Amity Lodge 340 AFM and served as local, district and Assistant General Chairman of Brotherhood of Railway Clerks.
After his retirement, Mr. Campbell enjoyed time with his grandsons and great grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife, Juliaette Purvis Campbell of the home; two daughters, Alice Campbell (B. Webb) Jones of Florence and Martha Campbell (Terry) Williams of Columbia; a sister, Joyce Campbell Rogers of Florence; a brother, John Campbell of Pamplico; two grandchildren, Barry Webb (Christie) Jones, III, of Easley, SC, and Blake Terence Williams (fiancé, Sadie Bettis) of Columbia; and two great-grandchildren, Reese Campbell Jones and Claire Marie Jones.
Mr. Campbell was predeceased by a brother, Marion Campbell; and a sister, Helen Campbell Johnson.
