FLORENCE - Martha Bennett Ellis, a resident of Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee, died Thursday, January 21, 2016 in a Florence hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am Monday, January 25, 2016 at St. John's Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral service in the church Parish Hall. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Mrs. Ellis, born in Marlboro County on April 18, 1920, was the daughter of Martha Baker and John Reedy Bennett. She graduated from Furman University and attended graduate school at Columbia University, NY. She was married for 71 years to the late Dr. Norman Douglas Ellis, Jr. Mrs. Ellis was an active member of St. John's Church since 1950. She was a former member of the Florence Junior League and charter member of the Florentine Society. She was an avid bridge player, continuing to play until her hospitalization.
Survivors include three daughters: Martha Ellis (Sterling) Beckman of Columbia, Sharon Ellis Hinnant of Charleston, and Pamela Ellis (Jimmy) Hall of Burlington, NC; a son, Norman Douglas (Jackie) Ellis, III, of Clemson; six grandchildren: Ramelle Beckman (Glenn) Dinofer of Sharpsburg, GA, Douglas Ellis "Trey" (Cary) Beckman of Columbia, Dr. Timothy Ellis (Susan) Crouch of Florence, Betsy Crouch (Aaron) Uddin of Atlanta, GA, Julianna Ellis, and Virginia Ellis, both of Clemson; seven great-grandchildren: Dallas and Seleena Dinofer, Jordan and Rachel Beckman, and Harrison, Bennett, and Brock Crouch; and a sister, Suzanne Bennett Coonen of Charlotte, NC.
She was predeceased by her son-in-law Dr. Whaley R. "Buddy" Hinnant.
