Mary Fields Plass Obituary

Mary Alexander Fields Plass was born in Friendfield, SC on October 29, 1928. She was the second of 13 children of the late M.C. ”Lurie” and Bertie Flowers Alexander. As the eldest child, she acted as a mother to her younger siblings, a role that was second nature as she had six children of her own. After the passing of her first husband, Haynie Fields Jr., she worked while raising her children alone including, Jerry Fields (Bobbie), Dan Fields (Georgianna), Craig Fields, Kent Fields (Alice), Tony Fields, and her only daughter, Cheryl Tayara (Mike).

She served as the secretary for Sunset Memory Gardens and Florence Memorial Gardens for over 30 years. She was a member of the ladies’ missionary group at the Florence Bible Chapel where she collected donations to send to missions, helping people all over the world. Later in life, she attended the Church at Parkland where she enjoyed hearing sermons from her son, Jerry, and getting hugs each Sunday.

Mary enjoyed gardening and admiring landscapes in her travels. She loved any occasion to gather and cook for her family and especially her grandchildren, Jeff Fields (Erma), Nathan Fields (Donna), Wendy Norris (Robbie), Keith Fields (Tracy), Dr. Erin Harris, Marianne Player (Brantley), Crystal Tayara Binns (Shannon), Bryan Tayara (Stephanie), Lauren Tayara, Meghan Yong (Andrew), Corley Godwin (Jamie), Katie Fields, Drew Fields, along with 19 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandson. “Mommy Al” to some and “NaNa” to others, passed peacefully in the presence of loved ones on May 7, 2025.

The family is grateful for her final caregivers at Honorage Nursing Home and Crescent Hospice.

She is preceded in death by her second husband, Alvin Plass; siblings, Josephine Alexander, Rev. Mac Alexander, Jamie Alexander, Charles Alexander, Lurie Alexander Jr., Dixie Schaner, Joyce Ard, and Betty Jo Timmons. She is survived by siblings, Rev. John Alexander (Sarah Ann), Rev. Nelson Alexander (Rose), Linda Poston (Roger) and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 10, 2025, at Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Florence Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service beginning at 10:00 a.m.
