FLORENCE - Mary Miles Young Swink, 63, passed away at McLeod Hospice House on Wednesday, April 27, 2016, after an illness. She was born on April 29, 1952, in Florence, a daughter of the late Florence H. and J. Givens Young. She is survived by two children James Woodrow Swink, III, of Florence and Lauren Young Swink of Columbia, SC; two sisters, Marian Young Howard and Elizabeth Young Gilbert, both of Florence; five nieces, three great-nieces, a great-nephew, and other extended family members. She is also survived by her special canine companion, Annie. Ms. Swink was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter, Amanda Brockington Swink.
Ms. Swink was a graduate of James F. Byrnes Academy and Converse College. She was a member of The First Presbyterian Church of Florence where she attended Just for Women's Ministries and Bible Study. As an artist of many talents, she used her talents both professionally and leisurely. Professionally she began her career as an artist with Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC, and later was self-employed as a graphic designer. She was also employed by Young Pecan Company in Florence for a period of time. In her leisure time, she was an avid photographer, a gourmet cook and enjoyed knitting professional-level pieces.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 1, 2016, at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery in Florence. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery. Memorials may be made to the McLeod Hospice House or McLeod Health Foundation, P. O. Box 100551, Florence, SC 29502.
