EFFINGHAM – Miriam Peay Carter, 81, died Monday, September 2, 2024, after a long illness.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 6, 2024, at Effingham Presbyterian Church with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, at Florence Memorial Gardens, services directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.
Mrs. Carter was born in Columbia, SC, a daughter of the late Robert Lamar and Beela Matthews Peay, and was raised in Ridgeway, SC. She earned a degree as a Certified Employee Benefit Specialist from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. She worked in employee benefits at the Sara Lee Corp. and at McLeod Regional Medical Center for many years until her retirement.
She was an active member of Effingham Presbyterian Church. Together with her friends from church, she enjoyed visiting and singing with residents at Commander Nursing Home. She was a devoted grandmother and was active in her grandchildren’s lives.
She was predeceased by her husband, Mitchell Carter, and a sister, George Anne Stein. She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Carter Richardson (Ward) of Effingham; a son, Timothy Mitchell Carter of Decatur, GA; a sister, Linda P. Bradshaw, of Rock Hill, SC; four granddaughters, Gracyn Richardson of Charleston, SC, Elizabeth Richardson of Florence, Miriam Maclain Carter and Camryn Ashlyn Carter, both of Decatur, GA; a grandson, Cullen Gates Carter of Ft. Collins, CO; and a number of nieces and nephews.
