Myrtle Windham Lowman

          Myrtle Windham Lowman of Florence SC passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on May 25, 2025.

          Myrtle was born on July 12, 1928, to parents Leon J. Windham and Beulah Amerson Windham in Lamar S.C.  Myrtle lived a long, rich and fulfilling life. She was a loving mother, adored by her two children, Dr. Carole L. Pillinger-Guess and Robert Wells Lowman, Jr. Esq.  Myrtle clearly loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was married to the late Robert Wells Lowman for 69 years and enjoyed travelling with him, particularly in their golden years.

          Myrtle enjoyed hosting Bridge Club events and even played online with the likes of Coach Lou Holtz. Being quite the hostess, she was known and appreciated for her superb baking and cooking skills.  She easily prepared exquisite meals for large gatherings. Myrtle loved her Gourmet Club meetings.  She was an active member of Saint Paul UM Church of Florence, and participated in United Methodists Women’s Groups, Meals On Wheels, Bible study groups, and various Circles.  She also participated in the Welcome Wagon and Newcomers Club.  Myrtle was truly blessed with a servant’s heart and a giving spirit. She loved serving others, which was a source of great joy for her.

          Myrtle had a deep passion for the arts and her community. While living in Marion SC, she enjoyed assisting at the Bobbie Ricks School of Dance. She was also deeply devoted to her children and chose to work within the Marion School System during their formative years. 

          Some of Myrtle’s hobbies included gardening, reading, sewing, cooking and painting. She was an excellent cook, frequently swapping recipes with friends. She was also a superb seamstress.  She enjoyed digging clams at Murrells Inlet with her friends and making her own delicious Murrells Inlet style Clam Chowder. Myrtle’s strawberry cake was a family favorite, frequently requested by her grandchildren for their birthdays. During the Cold War, Myrtle distributed government pamphlets containing information for the public about shelters and nuclear attacks. She loved flowers, particularly Gerbera daisies.

          Myrtle is survived by her two children Dr. Carole Lowman Pillinger- Guess (St. Clair)  of Murrells Inlet S.C. and Robert Wells Lowman, Jr. Esq. (Debra) of Florence S.C., grandchildren Dr. David Arthur Pillinger (Kelly) of Pittsford N.Y., Dr. Stephen Michael Pillinger (Emily) of Columbia S.C., Robert William Pillinger Esq. of Myrtle Beach S.C.,  Robert Wells Lowman IIII (Crista) of Columbia S.C., William Austin  Lowman (Megan) of Ashburn Va., and Emily Lowman Leapheart (Felder) of Florence S.C. She also had seven great granddaughters and a brother Eston Maurice Windham of Lamar S.C. Her beloved brother Leon Carroll  Windham predeceased her.

          The family is thankful for the care given to Myrtle by Dr. Steven Ross throughout the years, along  with her primary caregivers Marlene Olds, Felicia Campbell, the late Cathy Sutton, Ellen Lee, Comfort Keepers, and McLeod Hospice.

          Funeral services will be 12:00 noon, Wednesday, May 28, 2025, in Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel with visitation one hour prior to the service beginning at 11:00 a.m.  Entombment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery Mausoleum.

          In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Church, 1629 W. Palmetto St., Florence, SC  29501; or to the Salvation Army, Pee Dee Region, P. O. Box 4108, Florence, SC  29502.
