Nell M. Starks, 93, of Florence passed away on February 12,2024. Nell was born in March 15, 1930 in Jacksonville, NC, she was the daughter of the late Peyton Randolph Mitchell, Sr. and Nellie Winston Mitchell.
Nell attended Meredith College and then married her loving husband of 67 years, Howard Starks. Nell faithfully served the Lord along with Howard, as he was a Minister of Music over 60 years.
Howard and Nell moved to Florence in 1966 after Howard had served in several Baptist churches in IN, FL, NC and VA. Nell taught kindergarten at Greenwood Baptist Church and later was the attendance clerk at West Florence High School. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for 27 years and then became a member of First Baptist Church in Florence.
Nell loved her family more than anything, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved cooking and baking, reading, needlepoint, and cross-stitch.
Nell is survived by her son, David (Toni) Starks of Florence and her daughter, Deanie (Micky) Watts of Georgetown and four “dear” granddaughters, Jacqueline (David) Volz, Kendall (Wil) Merriman, Ashley (Davis) Skipper, and Brittany (Brandon) Ellis. She was also blessed with three great grandchildren, Stokes Volz, Olivia Ellis and Amelia Ellis.
She was predeceased by her husband Howard Starks, and her two siblings, P.R. Mitchell, Jr and Miriam Lynch.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, February 15, 2024 at Mount Hope Cemetery beginning at 2:00 pm, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.
