Nellie Avin Obituary

FLORENCE - Nellie Ann Richardson Avin, 91, died at home Friday, December 29, 2023, surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Avin was born at home in Marion County, SC. She was the daughter of the late Taylor Wilson Richardson and Minola Price Richardson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Perry Moses “P.M.” Avin, Jr; infant son, Tracy Marshall Avin; a sister, Jessie Purvis; and a brother, Donald Richardson.

Her family includes her son, Carlton Richard “Rick” Avin (Vanessa) of Florence; her daughter, Terry Avin Walkup (Tommy) of Effingham; three granddaughters, Mary Christian “Christy” Blalock (Tim) of Darlington, Kenan Walkup Granger (Cole) of Sardis, and Megan Walkup Mathers (Neil) of Florence; two grandsons, Michael Donovan Avin of Effingham and Trent Ashley Avin of Darlington; 15 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Avin was an accomplished seamstress and was employed with Turner Manufacturing Company (previously Florence Manufacturing) for 40 years. She could often be found making and altering clothes for those she loved. Upon retiring, she became a vital part of Avin’s Marine. Every morning she could be found at the desk answering the phone, conducting business, shelling pecans, and holding a kitten she had taken in. Her animals brought her great joy, and she was known for taking care of any stray that wandered into the yard.

She loved her family and spending time with them. This often meant fishing trips to Georgetown, traveling to Nashville, and hosting lovely meals. Mrs. Avin was a wonderful cook and enjoyed passing down her family recipes and skills like canning fig jelly and making homemade cakes.

Mrs. Avin was strong and independent. She enjoyed simple pleasures like sharing a meal and sending cards. Her distinct laughter and smile were warm and welcoming to those around her.

Mrs. Avin was a faithful follower of Jesus and a longtime member of Greenwood Baptist Church. She considered her fellow church members as family. She enjoyed the fellowship of the Senior Ladies’ Sunday School Class.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the faithful attendance of Mrs. Avin by McLeod Hospice. Their excellent care and respectful demeanor provided great comfort to both Mrs. Avin and the family day and night.
