FLORENCE Norma Alice Sheppard Verzi, 89, died Thursday, February 13, 2014, at Carolinas Hospital System. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at the Florence National Cemetery, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.
She was born in Clarendon County, SC, a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth McLeod Sheppard. She was a civilian employee at the Charleston Naval Base during World War II, where she met her husband, the late Paul William Verzi. They relocated to Newark, NJ, where they raised their family. In 1968, they returned to Florence, and Mrs. Verzi worked with her brother, Louis Sheppard, in one of Florences first ambulance services. She also worked in the restaurant and catering business for many years in Florence.
She was a devoted mother to her two children, Salvatore Verzi, and Antoinette Toni (Cary) Elvis, both of Florence. She was so very proud of her grandchildren, Christopher (Susan) Elvis of Irmo, SC, and Stephanie (Brent) Raley of Lexington, SC, and great-grandchildren, Olivia Elvis, Emily Raley, Katherine Raley and Garrett Raley. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Louise Smith of Florence; and devoted nieces, Frances and Virginia, of Columbia, and Lillian, of Conway.
