FLORENCE - Rachel Fulmer Lever joined the Church triumphant on Good Friday, April 18, 2014. A daughter of the late Reverend Verley L. and Edith Shell Fulmer, Mrs. Lever was born in Newton, N.C. where her father was serving as pastor of Beth Eden Lutheran Church. As the preeminent student in her college major, she was awarded the Philosophy Medal and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Newberry College in 1939. She was married by her father to James Carlyle Lever in 1941, immediately prior to Mr. Lever’s departure for four years’ service in the U. S. Army. Mrs. Lever taught French and English at the secondary level until starting her family. As a homemaker, she was a loving, devoted and supportive wife, mother and grandmother. A baptized, life-long Lutheran, Mrs. Lever was an active churchwoman, teaching first her children, then in congregation Sunday schools and in the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Sister Najla Circle.
She is survived by a daughter, Elaine Lever Burnett (Fred) of Florence; a son, David C. Lever (Beth) of Lexington; six grandchildren, James Carlyle Lever, II (Karla), Jennifer Lever Elrod (Todd), Abigail Lever McGill (Mac), Adrienne Lever Sorenson (Steven), Jonathan Hays Burnett (Jimena), and Juliett Burnett Collins (Matthew); eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Fulmer Craft (Joseph) and Edith Lorene Fulmer; and two brothers, John H. Fulmer (Vivian) and James V. Fulmer (Martha).
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, William and Sidney Fulmer; one sister, Alice Rebecca Pitts; two sons, Daniel F. Lever and Verley F. Lever; and one grandson, Timothy Brandon Lever.
Services will be conducted by the Rev. Jeffrey W. Shealy on Tuesday, April 22, at 3:00 p.m., St. Luke Lutheran Church, Florence, SC, with burial following in Mount Hope Cemetery. Prior to the service, visitation will be held at the church from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
