Ray Thames Obituary

FLORENCE – Ray Edward Thames, 80, died Thursday, April 10, 2014, at his home after an illness.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, April 13, 2014, at Oakdale Baptist Church in Florence. The family will greet friends following the service.

He was born in Clarendon County, SC, a son of the late Leonard Hodge and Margie Thames. He was retired from CSX Railroad and also served in the U.S. Army Reserves during the Korean War.

Ray was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He was also a charter member of the Safe Guard, Woodmen of the World, the Ruritan Club, and the Retired Railroad Employees Club.

Ray was best known as a sports fanatic. He supported all area sports teams, particularly Francis Marion University athletics and the Florence Red Wolves.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shelbia Dunn Thames of Florence; a daughter, Tiffany T. Hight, also of Florence; a son, Darren Thames of Albertville, AL; and two grandchildren, Declan Turner and Harper Lyn Turner.
