FLORENCE Robert Keel Harmon, 88, died Thursday, June 16, 2016, after an illness.
Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m., Saturday, June 18, 2016, at First Baptist Church in Florence with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be 3:00 p.m., Monday, June 20, 2016, at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Columbia, SC, with William Harmon, Jr., of Columbia, officiating. Waters-Powell Funeral Home of Florence is in charge of funeral arrangements.
Mr. Harmon was born in Florence, a son of the late James Evans Harmon, Sr., and Mary Elizabeth Keel Harmon. He graduated from Lower Richland High School and attended the University of South Carolina. Mr. Harmon was a veteran of the United States Air Force, where he was an airborne radio instructor. He retired from AT&T after 38 years as an engineering supervisor.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Florence for over 50 years, and was affiliated with the media ministry for the past 25 years. He was a member and past president of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was also a member of The Gideons International. As a member of the Kiwanis Club in Florence, he was awarded the George Hickson Fellowship Award. He was also a life member of the amateur radio/HAM radio operators association.
He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia Hancock Harmon; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Mauk; and two brothers, James Evans Harmon, Jr., and William Hayne Harmon.
Survivors include his daughter, Lynda Harmon Graham (David Neal) of Florence; four grandchildren, Misti Smith (Scott) of Florence, Lindsay Patrick (Jason) of Spartanburg, Kelly Sanderson (Jeff) of Greenville, and James Robert Harrell (Lacey), also of Florence; two sisters-in-law, Eleanor Harmon of Columbia and Gloria Harmon Ziemer of Chapin; eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
