FLORENCE – Roger Mervin Godwin, age 87, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2024, after an illness.
A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, May 3, 2024, at Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. prior to the service at Mount Hope Cemetery.
Mr. Godwin was born in Scranton, SC on October 10, 1936, a son of the late Willard E. Godwin and Bleecker G. Godwin. A resident of Florence since 1963, Mr. Godwin was a retired maintenance mechanic from DuPont. He was the owner of Godwin’s Launderette and became an accomplished woodworker upon retiring from DuPont. Mr. Godwin was an avid reader and lover of all things associated with Southern History. Most of all, he loved his wife, children and family unconditionally.
He was predeceased by his parents, and sisters, Jean Godwin and Eve Lynch.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara T. Godwin; daughter, Dana (Daniel) Holladay of Florence, SC; son, Walter (Billie Jo) Godwin of Beaufort, SC; three grandchildren, Joshua (Sabrina) Holladay of Marshville, NC, Sarah Holladay and Jesse Holladay, both of Florence; five great-grandchildren, Wyatt Holladay, Cole Holladay, Brynlee Holladay, Kinsley Cash and Delaney Cash; sister, Anne (Bobby) Miles of Columbia, SC; brother, Edward (Sarah) Godwin of Simpsonville, SC; and dear family friend, Johnny McCoy of Florence.
