Rosalyn Senseney Davis

          COLUMBIA – Rosalyn Senseney Davis, age 93, died peacefully on Saturday, December 23, 2023, after a brief illness.

          Rosalyn was born in Florence, SC, on July 7, 1930, to the late Harvey Greenlee Senseney, Jr., and Orie Lambert Senseney.  Raised in Florence, she graduated from Florence High School, attended St. Mary’s Junior College, and earned a bachelor’s degree from Converse College in 1951.

          In 1952, she married her childhood sweetheart, Clarence Sylvester Davis, Jr., also of Florence, SC, and they remained sweethearts and best friends for 71 wonderful years together.  After Clarence’s short assignment overseas in the Air Force, they returned to South Carolina for Clarence to attend medical school at MUSC in Charleston, eventually settling back in Florence with three young children.

          In addition to being a loving and busy mother, Rosalyn (affectionately known as “Roz” to her close friends) was involved in a number of clubs and organizations.  Among her favorites were the Gay Gardeners Garden Club (with her close gardening buddies), the medical women’s auxiliary, First Presbyterian Church Women’s Circle, and her weekly Bible study.  She also loved arranging flowers, painting, and decorating her home, especially at Christmas. Christmas was her favorite season, and every room in her house was filled with fresh greenery and the laughter of her children and grandchildren, who couldn’t wait to get to Rozzie and Papa C’s house.

          Rosalyn and Clarence made every effort to fill their home with the spirit of Christ and to reflect that love in their daily lives.  They moved to Columbia in 2010 to live close to their children and be involved in their grandchildren’s lives.

          The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to their caregivers, Doris and Ineatha, who took loving care of her and treated her like family.

          In addition to her husband, Clarence S. Davis, Jr., MD, Rosalyn is survived by her son, Clarence S. "Chuck" Davis, III, MD (Kathy); and daughters, Jeannie Davis Powell (Hartley), and Evie Davis Bunge (John).  She is also survived by her two brothers, Harvey G. Senseney, III (Susan) of Florence, SC, and David Barton Senseney (Sherrill, deceased) of Burnsville, NC; grandchildren, Michael McDonald Davis, MD (Leah), James Greenlee Davis, Kathryn Elizabeth Davis, Caroline Rosalyn Davis, Davis Hartley Powell (Kate), Preston Correll Powell (fiancé, Sam), John Frederick Bunge, Jr. (Kaitlin), and Hannah Rosalyn Bunge; and eight great-grandchildren.

          A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 28, 2023, at Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.
