FLORENCE Rufus Marion Sullivan, Jr., 93, crossed the bar on Saturday, April 25, 2015, after an illness.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 28, 2015, at Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel with entombment following at Mount Hope Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.
Mr. Sullivan was born in Clinton, SC, a son of the late Rufus Marion Sullivan Sr., and Mynia Robinson Sullivan on November 30, 1921. After enlisting in the US Coast Guard, Mr. Sullivan served his country during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Ocean area of operation as a member of the crew of the U.S.S. LST-791 during the Philippine Liberation and the invasion of the Japanese home island of Okinawa, on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945, in the occupation of Japan.
Upon returning home, Mr. Sullivan realized a lifetime ambition of becoming a member of the S.C. Highway Patrol. After serving 30 years, he retired as a lieutenant. After retirement he worked 30 more years at various occupations while maintaining a hobby of woodworking.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Florence.
He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Doris McClain Sullivan; his three sons, Eric Sherwood Sullivan, Anthony Wayne Sullivan, and Marshall Gregg Sullivan; and his sisters.
Survivors include a grandson, John Eric Sullivan, and granddaughter, Jessica Erin Sullivan; a daughter-in-law, Karla Sullivan of Darlington; a number of nieces, nephews, and extended family; and a host of friends and caregivers.
