FLORENCE - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sallie Burnette Spring McKenzie on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at the age of 99.
Born in Florence County on July 11, 1925, Burnette was the daughter of the Late George Dewey Spring and Lizzie Springs Spring. She was the beloved wife of the late Garris William McKenzie and a devoted mother, loving grandmother and great-grandmother. She was not only a homemaker, but a very industrious woman. She worked on the family farm, at Electric Motors, owned and rented several mobile homes, owned her own cloth store, made clothing alterations for people, and in her later years served as a caregiver for multiple families.
She loved reading her bible, working in her yard, her multiple gardens, and canning. She was well known for her cooking and famous for her cakes.
Surviving are two children, Thomas (Kathy) McKenzie, and Phyllis (Frank) Shaffer; six grandchildren, John (Leisa) McKenzie, Mark McKenzie, Nichole (Teddy)Stambolitis, Desiree’ Shaffer, Bobby McKenzie; siblings Adlevia (Jerry) Strawn, George (Mitzi) Spring, Donald (Donna) Spring, Annette (Butch) Cusaac, Julia (Timmons) Floyd, and Jannette (Lynn) Coward; along with twelve great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Barnette (Gail) McKenzie, Bobby (Geannie) McKenzie; grandson, Jamie Turner; granddaughter, Devon Shaffer; siblings, Arnette Spring, Duewell Spring, Sudean Hanna, Margie Lee, and Lib Yonas.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 7, 2025, at Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Florence Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 am, prior to the funeral service.
