FLORENCE Samuel Farrar Arthur, Jr., 70, died Tuesday, November 4, 2014, at McLeod Hospice House after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 7, 2014, at St. Johns Church. The family will greet friends following the service in the courtyard of the church. Burial with military honors will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Waters-Powell Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Sam was born in Florence, a son of the late Samuel F. Arthur and Lois Thompson Arthur. Mr. Arthur was a 1962 graduate of McClenaghan High School and the University of Georgia. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy, including service in the Vietnam War. He was retired from Progress Energy.
Mr. Arthur was a lifelong, active member of St. Johns Church, where he previously served on the Vestry. He was also a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Florence, a Mason and Shriner.
He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Hoyt Arthur Todd.
Survivors include his wife, Lyndon Nelson Arthur of the home; a daughter, Elizabeth A. Betsy (William W., III) Carroll of St. Matthews, SC; a son, Samuel F. Buddy (Blakely Baroody) Arthur, III, of Florence; a sister, Josie A. (Allen) Wood of Florence; sister-in-law, Diane N. (William G.) Morris and brother-in-law, David H. (Jerry) Nelson, both of Florence; grandchildren, Carson, James Wyatt, Grace, John Cooper, and Jenna Banks; a god-child and nephew, Allen Price Wood, Jr., and a number of nieces and extended family. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Dutch.
