Scott Nivens Obituary

Scott Alexander Nivens of Florence SC passed away January 31, 2015 after a short illness. His children were at his bedside in his home, at The Carolinian.

He was born February 26, 1925 in Charlotte, NC, the son of Walter James and Camie Nivens. He graduated from Central High School in Charlotte NC and attended Duke University. His education was interrupted in service to his country in WWII. He was a Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy and served on a submarine in the Pacific theater. While stationed at Midway, he became known as Red.

Following the war, he married Betty Eleanor Mitchell of Lancaster, SC and moved to Raleigh, NC to complete his education in Civil Engineering at North Carolina State University. He returned to Charlotte to join the family business, Nivens Construction Company and Lumber Yard.

Mr. Nivens remained in construction all of his life, in Florence and Myrtle Beach SC. There was nothing better to him than to hear the echo of hammers and smell of fresh cut lumber. He was happiest when crafting things from wood and gained local fame in the Charlotte area for the wooden cabin cruiser he built and launched into the Catawba River.

Mr. Nivens was an avid bridge player up until the end of his life. He enjoyed his Wednesday afternoon group.

Mr. Nivens was predeceased by wife, Betty and grandson, Clete Skipper, III. He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Scott A Nivens, Jr. and Christa; Kathy Nivens Campbell and David, all of Florence; and Linda Nivens Abney of Charlotte. Also eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren who affectionately called him DaDa.

Funeral services will be 6:00 PM Monday, February 2, 2015, at Highland Park United Methodist Church. Burial will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 3 at Elmwood Cemetery in Charlotte, NC, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home of Florence. The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Nivens, Jr.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or to a charity of ones choice.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of The Carolinian and Regency Hospice.
