Shirley Brown Obituary

FLORENCE Shirley Anne Greene Brown went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, August 15, 2013. She was surrounded by family, caretakers, and beloved pets.

Shirley was born November 10, 1928, to George and Norma Greene in Iron Gate, Virginia. Because of her beautiful hair, her nickname was, of course, Red. She was married to the late Roddey M. Brown, Jr., from Florence, SC. Shirley graduated as a registered nurse from the University of Virginia and also Duke University as a certified nurse anesthetist (CRNA). She was employed as a registered nurse at King Daughters Hospital and Western State Hospital in Staunton, Virginia. Shirley was also employed as CRNA at Wilson Medical Center, Wilson, NC. It was in Wilson that Shirley met her love, Roddey, and his kids, Cathy and Little Roddey. Roddey and Shirley moved to Florida where Shirley worked in Miami Eye Clinic, Miami, FL. She then worked at Ambulatory Surgery Clinic in Hollywood, FL, from which she retired.

Shirley was gifted and talented. She played the piano, and could make almost anything with needle and thread. She loved to read and work puzzles. She had a unique sense of humor, and sometimes when you least expected it. Shirley and Roddey spent many happy years on the Isles of Capri, Naples, FL. They enjoyed many years of traveling and fishing together.

Eight years ago, Roddey and Shirley moved to Florence, due to declining health. Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Roddey; their grandson, Luke Carnahan; and her sister, Anita Shelton.

She is survived by son, Larry L. (Pam) Clemmer of Georgia; step-daughter, Catherine Carnahan of the home; and step-son, Roddey M. Brown, III, of Israel; grandchildren, Ali Parker (Jimmy Cox), Jennifer, Stacy, and Kristi Clemmer, Nicki (Robert) Kersey, Matt (Ashley) Carnahan; great-grandchildren, Kylie, Maddie, Aubrey, Alanna, Ella Lee, and Kailey Mae. Shirley is also survived by her brother, George O. Greene, IV; and a very special niece, Carolyn (Jerry) Nottingham.

The family expresses special thanks to her caregivers, Mrs. Little and Sandra, and her nurse, Leslie.

Shirley will be sadly missed by Cathy and their pug, Miss T, and their five furry felines.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Florence Area Humane Society, P. O. Box 4808, Florence, SC 29502.
