Stanley Strickland Obituary

FLORENCE Capt. Stanley Paul Strickland, U.S. Naval Reserve, Retired, age 81, died Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at McLeod Hospice House after an illness.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Monday, June 23, 2014, in Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial with military honors will follow in Florence National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home.

He was born in Tulsa, OK, a son of the late William Paul and Dorothy Stone Strickland. Mr. Strickland attended Texas A&M and graduated from the United States Naval Academy. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy as midshipman, Navy carrier pilot, diplomat and intelligence specialist. During his 30-year career in the Navy and Naval Reserves, he served during the Korean Conflict, Bay of Pigs, Cuban Missile Crisis, Dominican Republic Crisis, and the Viet Nam War. He retired in 1982. Mr. Strickland was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Cribb Strickland of Florence; five daughters, Beverly (John) Lane, Barbara (John) Bruns, Kathy Luhrs, Connie (Andrew) Taylor, and Gerry (Garrett) Strickland; five grandchildren, Katie (Michael) Coit, Anna Lane, Wil Luhrs, Chloe Taylor and Sam Luhrs; a sister, Dorothy Ann Storms; two great-grandchildren, a loving niece and nephew, and many beloved friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Stanley Paul Strickland Memorial Fund at First Reliance Bank, The Wounded Warrior Project, or McLeod Hospice House.
