Sylvia Harrelson Obituary

FLORENCE Mrs. Sylvia June McPherson Harrelson, 87, widow of Sam Clyde Harrelson, died on Wednesday, November 27, 2013, at the McLeod Hospice House after an illness.

Mrs. Harrelson was born in Mullins, SC, a daughter of the late John Olin McPherson and Eloise Bryant McPherson. She worked as a branch manager and officer with the Bank of Florence (later Citizens and Southern Bank). She was the first female bank officer in the state of South Carolina. She retired in 1985. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends at her lake home at Santee.

Surviving Mrs. Harrelson are two sons: Sam C. Harrelson (Diane Stewart) of Pawleys Island, SC, and Ron O. Harrelson, Sr. (Gaby Guyton) of Florence; five grandchildren: Ron O. Harrelson, Jr. of Florence, Kym Harrelson Davidson of Wilmington, NC, Jeremy Harrelson (Lauren) of Pawleys Island, SC, Stewart Harrelson of Murrells Inlet, SC, and Mitch Johnson (Meredith) of Washington, DC; three great-grandchildren: Samantha Harrelson of Florence and Skyler and Phoebe Davidson of Wilmington, NC; two brothers: Melville Bryant McPherson and James Olin McPherson; and one sister: Tovey M. Stanton. Mrs. Harrelson is also survived by a dear friend and caregiver, JoAnn (Lady Bug) McLaurin, of Florence.

Mrs. Harrelson was predeceased by one sister: Virginia M. Boatwright.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, December 1, 2013, at the Mausoleum at Mount Hope Cemetery, Florence, SC, with Pastor Bob Norris and The Reverend Ken Weldon officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Services are being handled by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.

The family wants to especially thank the doctors and staff of McLeod Hospital (Oncology, 7th floor), McLeod Hospice House, JoAnn McLaurin and Michelle Thompson for their loving and compassionate care of Mrs. Harrelson.

Memorials may be made to the McLeod Hospice House, the American Cancer Society or to a charity of ones choice.
