Virginia Rogers Obituary

FLORENCE - Virginia Maxine Pleasant Rogers, 85, of Florence died peacefully on Saturday, December 7, 2013.

Mrs. Rogers was born in Johnston County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late George William and Annie Bell White Pleasant. She attended NC public schools and graduated from Corinth Holder. She worked for National Geographic Magazine in Washington, DC, and the North Carolina Commission for the Blind in Raleigh, NC. After relocating to South Carolina with her family, she was a homemaker, loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She volunteered as den mother and as Girl Scout leader for 12 years. She also served as Nursery Coordinator for Calvary Baptist Church. During these years, she enjoyed sewing for others and gardening. Her green thumb applied equally to tending her garden and nurturing children. This led to her later career as owner and Director of Charlie Brown Daycare for 22 years.

As a member of Central United Methodist Church, she was active in United Methodist Women, Christian Family Sunday School Class and Young at Heart Seniors Group.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Max G. Rogers, of Florence; a daughter, Melinda (Wes) Fowler, of Florence; two sons, Steven (Penny) Rogers of Hartsville, SC, and Jeffrey Max (Leah) Rogers of Surfside Beach, SC; four grandchildren, Daniel (Catherine) Layfield of Charleston, SC, Michael Rogers (Samantha Costley) of N. Charleston, Erica Rogers of Emerald Isle, NC, and Ashley Fowler (Blake) Hodge of Varnville, SC; and three great-grandchildren, Daniel, Jr. and namesake, Virginia Layfield, and Trace Hodge.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 10, 2013, in Central United Methodist Church with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Entombment will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.
