Florence- Walter N. Lawson, Jr. died March 20, 2015 at the Hospice House after a long battle with cancer. Walter devoted much of his life to his Lord and touched many lives with his faith.
A service will be held at St. Johns Episcopal Church on Sunday, March 22, 2015 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall immediately following. Interment will follow after visitation at Mount Hope Cemetery directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.
Walter was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a true friend to many. He was born September 7, 1935 in Florence and was the son of the late Charlotte Davis Lawson and Walter Nesbit Lawson. He was educated in Florence city schools, Georgia Military Academy, and graduated from The University of Georgia. Walter was a CLU with AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company for 42 years. He served as the US Marshall of SC at 31 years of age, which is still the youngest to have served. He also served on the SC Junior Parole Board, was Chairman of the SC Adult Parole Board, and Chairman of the SC Highway Commission.
The real love of his life was his family. He is survived by Sarah Ella Lawson, his loving wife of 57 years; his children, Chartee Hepler of Pawleys Island, Walter Buzzy Lawson of Hilton Head, and Ted Lawson and his wife, Robin, of Charlotte, NC. He was devoted to his four grandchildren, Patrick Lawson, Matthew Lawson, Stephen Hepler, and Sarah Hepler. He is also survived by his nephews, Trey Stone, David Stone, and Dr. Croft Stone; cousins, Ann Armstrong (John) of Lookout Mountain, TN, Lawson Armstrong, and Jonathan Armstrong.
Walter was an accomplished golfer, being one of the first great junior golfers out of Florence during the Grant Bennett era. While serving in the Marine Corps, he was part of the All Marine Corps Golf Team, competing in many tournaments including two Hawaiian Opens. He was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church where he served as Senior Warden. In later years, he was a member of The Church at Sandhurst, and sister church, Church on King.
