FLORENCE - William P. "Billy" Campbell, 86, died Wednesday, July 1, 2015, at his home after a long battle with cancer. Billy, or Papa, as he was affectionately known by his family, was born in Florence, a son of the late Dock M. and Lottie Martin Campbell. He was the widower of his wife of 66 years, Betty Snipes Campbell. Billy attended Florence Public schools, was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was a Korean War Veteran.
Billy was a manager for State Farm Insurance for over 40 years. He was a founder and partner of ACS Technologies here in Florence. Billy served on Florence City Council and was a member of the VFW and the Lions Club. Billy loved life, loved people and loved his family. Billy was a self-taught businessman. No family conversations could take place, especially with his grandchildren, without him making sure there was a lesson in business and finance included.
Billy produced and published two books, "Heroes of World War II from Florence County" and "Creating Jobs through Entrepreneurship." Proceeds from the sales were donated to widows of veterans. He loved to give the book "Jesus Calling" to anyone experiencing grief or sorrow.
Billy is survived by his three children, Scotty (Pam) Campbell of Lake City, Melissa (John) Goodson of Swanee, TN, and Paige (Hugh) Tuttle of Florence; seven grandchildren, Billy Campbell, Ashley Campbell, Whit Campbell, Savannah Wright, Madison Wright, Slater Goodson, and Mason Goodson; and his special friends, George Leonard and Renee Owens.
Billy was preceded in death by his wife Betty, sisters Ruth Fienberg, Helen Quick, Catherine Parker, and brothers Dock Campbell and Jack Campbell.
The family would like to thank Dr. James Smith and his great group at McLeod Oncology, McLeod Hospice and the wonderful ladies at Comfort Keepers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of ones choice.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 3, 2015, at Calvary Baptist Church, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home, and briefly following the service before a private family interment.
