Willis Cox Obituary

FLORENCE Willis DeLeon Cox passed away on February 10, 2015, in Morristown, TN. Born in Florence, SC, on February 16, 1922, he was the son of the late Gladys Boswell and Charles DeLeon Cox.

Willis served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. After an honorable discharge he returned to Florence, where he was owner of Cox Mercantile and was later employed with Life Insurance Company of Georgia until his retirement. While residing in Florence, he was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. For the past 14 years, he lived with his daughter and her husband in Port St. Lucie, FL, and Morristown, TN.

Mr. Cox was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe Boswell Cox and James M. Cox; his first wife, Athea Mae Richardson Cox; a son, Michael D. Cox; and his second wife, Virginia Turner Cox.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda C. Matthews and her husband, Curtis Matthews, currently of Brunswick, GA; two grandchildren, Michael D. Cox, Jr. of Florence, and Jennifer M. Carnevale of Brighton, MI, along with five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, February 13, 2015, in Mount Hope Cemetery in Florence, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church, 306 W. Cherokee Road, Florence, SC 29501.
